Senegalese writer Sheikh Hamidou Cane has died at the age of 98 in Dakar. This was announced by the President of Senegal Bassiro Diomai Fai.

Senegalese writer Sheikh Hamidou Cane has died at the age of 98 in Dakar. This was announced by the President of Senegal Bassiro Diomai Fai.
Shortly before his death, Kane was hospitalized in one of the hospitals of the capital. He noted that his works are part of the cultural heritage of Senegal and all of Africa.
World fame brought Canet debut novel “Ambiguous excellent degree”, published in 1961. In it, the author explored the identity crisis of a young African brought up in the Islamic tradition and received a European education. In 1995, Cane published a novel, The Guardians of the Temple, about the problems of postcolonial Senegal.
After the country's independence in 1960, Kane became Minister of Planning and Cooperation in the government of Leopold Sedar Sengore. He later held senior positions in UNICEF and oversaw humanitarian and social programmes across Africa.
