Last year, archaeologist Boris Korotkevich transferred to the funds of the Belozersk Regional Museum of Local Lore a unique find – a carved body image of the XVI century, made of sawing from a deposit cross. The icon was discovered during the laying of a gas pipeline in the historical part of Belozersk and lay in the ground for almost five centuries.
The image depicts Solovetsky hierarchs Zosimus and Savvatius. The inscription above the third figure has not yet been read.
Since the tree extracted from the ground is rapidly destroyed, the icon was transferred to the State Hermitage. There are no specialists in the conservation of the archaeological tree. The main curator of the museum Tatiana Bogomolova presented the image to the artist-restorer of the highest category Natalia Vasilyeva.
The restoration will take about a year. Specialists will stop biological destruction, impregnate synthetic resins and clear the author's thread. The museum will monitor the stages of work.
