Wind speed in the epicenter of the cyclone can reach 177 kilometers per hour. Forecasters predict large-scale floods and power outages.
The storm will travel east of major oil platforms and gas pipelines off the coast of Louisiana and Texas. The impact zone will also affect the city of Pensacola and Eglin Air Base in Florida.
With the cyclone approaching, operators have already suspended about 9.2% of oil production and 3.4% of natural gas production in the region. According to preliminary estimates, the potential economic damage from the hurricane could exceed six billion dollars.
