The visiting event was attended by specialists of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the region, members of the Eco-Council, deputies of the Altai Legislative Assembly, representatives of the Russian Ecological Society, hunting community, social activists, as well as Ecomolodezhka22. Initially, they got acquainted with the work of the hunting farm.

As noted in the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Altai Territory, in addition to the organization of hunting, they contribute to the preservation and reproduction of hunting resources. Farm workers equip feeding grounds, harvest grain, hay and salt. They also keep records of animals and carry out production hunting control.

One of the central topics of discussion was the increase in the number of brown bears and the increasing cases of their appearance near settlements. One of the high-profile incidents occurred last week in the Salton district, where the teenager was attacked by a bear.

The reasons for the release of wild animals to people, experts include the migration of animals from neighboring regions. Since the beginning of this year, measures have been taken to regulate the number of bears in the region. So, within the boundaries of hunting grounds of the Altai Territory during this time, about 80 individuals were produced, 21 of which are within the boundaries of hunting grounds of the Saltonsky district.

Experts believe that the existing mechanisms for regulating the number of wild animals do not always allow to respond quickly to situations when they appear in a populated area, posing a threat to people. Even with the fastest possible execution of the necessary documents, the passage of licensing procedures takes time. While in emergency situations, the bill can go on hours and minutes.

The participants discussed several areas of improvement of federal legislation in this regard. We are talking about mechanisms for regulating the number of brown bears, prompt response to threats to the population and strengthening state hunting control.

Following the meeting, the Eco-Council of the Altai Territory, together with relevant specialists and deputies of the regional parliament, will prepare proposals on these issues for further direction to the federal level.

“It is important that residents are protected and that response tools are prompt, understandable and effective. At the same time, it is important to maintain a balance, build a system where people’s safety and biodiversity conservation should not contradict each other, said Alexey Krivenko, Chairman of the APGC Committee on Agrarian Policy, Ecology and Environmental Management.
