The Hermitage opened an exhibition in honor of the 175th anniversary of the launch of the railway line between St. Petersburg and Moscow. The ceremony was attended by Governor Alexander Beglov, Head of Russian Railways Oleg Belozerov and General Director of the Museum Mikhail Piotrovsky. This was reported by the Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Kirill Polyakov.
According to the Vice-Governor, the choice of the site for the exhibition is not accidental. It was within the walls of the Winter Palace that fateful decisions were once made on laying the first roads in the country. The Nikolaev road was a real breakthrough for the XIX century. At the time of construction, it was the world's longest double-track highway, built on a single project.
For the sake of this construction, the country actually launched its own transport engineering from scratch and introduced advanced engineering standards, including the “Russian track”. The launch of regular traffic upended the logistics of the empire, connecting the administrative center with the leading economic hub. This gave a tremendous impetus to the development of industry and laid the foundation for a single economic space.
According to Kirill Polyakov, today the Northern capital is still one of the key transport hubs of the country. The experience of the past years provides a reliable basis for the implementation of new infrastructure initiatives.
