Medieval disease spread in Europe
In the Czech Republic, the number of patients with scabies - a parasitic skin infection has increased significantly

In the Czech Republic, the number of cases of scabies, a parasitic skin infection, has significantly increased. Most cases are detected in the Moravian-Silesian region, including in Ostrava, according to the publication iDNES.cz.
According to the Institute of Health of the Czech Republic, 9,917 cases of the disease were registered in the country in January-September 2026. During the same period of 2025, there were 7,542, and in 2020 - 1,648.
In September, the Moravian-Silesian Territory became the leader in the number of new cases: 187 cases were identified there. Since the beginning of the year, 1,882 people have been diagnosed with the infection in the region, of which 741 cases occurred in Ostrava.
The disease is also spreading in social services. In one of the nursing homes of Ostrava, scabies was found in three guests. To prevent further infection, the administration has stepped up preventive measures and suspended group classes. During the year, the sanitary services of the region recorded six group outbreaks in social institutions.
The reasons for the increase in the incidence remain unclear. Among the possible explanations, experts consider the cyclical spread of infection, the close interaction of people in institutions of cohabitation and travel. In addition, an increase in the number of reported cases may have been affected by the change in the communicable disease accounting system to an electronic format.
Earlier outbreaks of scabies were recorded in the Spanish military.
