In Hong Kong recorded a sharp increase in the incidence of a rare infection

The Center for Health Protection (CHP) in Hong Kong reported in an official press release a significant spike in the incidence of monkeypox (mpox). According to the Ministry, over the past month, the number of infected in the region increased by 70 percent.

Since August, 21 new cases have been identified in Hong Kong, accounting for 70 percent of the total incidence statistics for the current year.

According to the release, since 2022, 114 cases of mpox have been officially registered in the metropolis, of which 90 are local, and 24 are imported. It is noted that all identified patients are men. Since the beginning of this year, 30 cases of infection have been recorded, including 23 local and seven imported from abroad.

Due to the significant increase in the number of infected, CHP management is implementing targeted preventive and control measures, using a comprehensive approach to interrupt the chains of transmission of the virus. At the same time, the volume of vaccination of the population under the special program against mpox is gradually increasing. Medical experts also warn that risky sexual contact, especially with unfamiliar people, remains one of the main ways of spreading the infection, and urge citizens to remain vigilant.

Monkeypox is a rare viral infection that is predominantly common in remote regions of Central and West Africa bordering humid rainforests. According to the World Health Organization, the virus is transmitted to humans from wild animals, particularly rodents and primates, while human-to-human transmission is limited. As a rule, the mortality rate during outbreaks of this disease varies from 1 to 10 percent, with the vast majority of deaths recorded among younger age groups.
