In Kaliningrad, the historic building of the city pawnshop Koenigsberg on Copernicus Street, 21 received the status of a monument of regional significance. Previously, the house was listed as an identified object of cultural heritage, and now its protection is officially fixed.
The order of the State Protection Service of Cultural Heritage objects was signed on May 21, but it became known only now. The document determines what elements of the building should be preserved, establishes the boundaries of the protected area and the rules for its use.
The house was included in the list of identified cultural heritage sites in 2019 under the name “City Lombard of Koenigsberg, 1901”. In late May - early June, the owner removed the old roof covering and partially dismantled the Soviet-era elevator attached to the wall. A representative of the owner then argued that these works will not cause serious damage to the building.
However, the head of the State Security Service Evgeny Maslov considered the dismantling of the roof unauthorized and not agreed with the department. On June 13, 2024, he appealed to the police of the Leningrad district of Kaliningrad. In September of the same year, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that no administrative or criminal case was opened on this appeal.
In December 2024, Maslov said that the owner will not be able to legalize the new roof installed instead of the removed. The building is owned by one of the Kaliningrad companies, which is headed by a local entrepreneur Dmitry Xenophontov.
Earlier, “MK in Kaliningrad” wrote that in Kaliningrad offered to restore the demolished building of the XIX century.
