The certificate was discovered on July 26, 1951 at the Nerevsky excavation in Veliky Novgorod. It is a short record – it does not contain high-profile historical statements, but it became a real sensation: it proved that in medieval Novgorod literacy was widespread not only among the elite, but also among ordinary citizens. With this discovery started a whole scientific era: today in Novgorod found more than 1200 birch bark.
At the exhibition you will see the same diploma No. 1, which 75 years ago began the study of birch bark letters: for the first time in many years it returns from the State Historical Museum to its homeland.
