In the suburbs observed the northern lights

On the night of October 10, residents of the Moscow region witnessed a rare phenomenon for the region - the Northern Lights. Green-red flashes in the sky were seen in Egorievsk, Ramenskoye, as well as in the area of Lotoshino. Residents of Klin and the surrounding area also published pictures of bright green arcs.
The appearance of aurora in the middle latitudes is directly related to a powerful magnetic storm that covered the Earth. According to the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Solar Astronomy Laboratory, the storm began around 20:00 Moscow time on October 10 and reached the level of G3 - this is the third strongest category out of five possible. A magnetic storm of comparable intensity was last recorded on July 4, 2026.
The source of the disturbance was the Sun. At the beginning of the week on its surface there was a strong flash, which threw into space several clouds of plasma. After reaching Earth, these charged particles interacted with the planet’s magnetosphere, causing a magnetic storm and shifting the aurora zone to lower latitudes. Usually auroras are visible in the Arctic circle, but with strong storms they become noticeable in the middle of Russia.
According to experts, the unstable state of the Earth’s magnetic field can persist for about a day. This means that in the near future, residents of high and partially middle latitudes still have a chance to see the northern lights.
