The center noted that the image was badly damaged: the soil and paint peeled off, the painting melted, the varnish darkened and was unevenly applied, with dark clots.
In 2026, restoration artist Anastasia Shavrina began to restore the icon. She began by strengthening the colorful layer and the levkas, which is a special soil applied to a wooden base before creating the icon. After that, she removed the old darkened varnish. The work was difficult due to the different preservation of parts of the image. Each site has its own recovery method. The lost fragments were filled with restoration soil and tinted, trying to preserve as much as possible the authentic painting and historical appearance of the icon.
The icon with 12 stamps depicts the main Orthodox holidays: Christmas, Baptism, Transfiguration and Ascension. These small images surround the central composition, allowing you to see several important events on one icon.
The International Restoration Center opened on Christmas Day in 2023. The complex with an area of 10 thousand square meters includes workshops, laboratories, storage facilities and exhibition halls.
Earlier, “MK in Leningrad region” said that in 2025, Anastasia Shavrina restored the icon of the XIX century “Rev. Arseny Konevsky” from the museum-estate “Suyda”. Restorers strengthened the damaged soil and paint. After removing the old varnish, they found previously hidden details, including folds of the saint's clothes and an image of Our Lady with the Child. The greatest difficulty was the restoration of a significant fragment lost in the lower part of the face of Arseny Konevsky.
