In the Sochi arboretum grows a rare representative of the North American flora for Russian parks - marsh oak. In November, its leaves, resembling maple, should acquire a rich red hue.
On the territory of the Sochi Arboretum, visitors can see the swamp oak (Quercus palustris), which stands out by the characteristic shape of the crown and the unusual autumn color. The features of the plant were told by representatives of the Sochi National Park.
The tree is native to the eastern part of North America, where it grows mainly in floodplains and moist soils. Its distinctive feature is the ability to withstand prolonged seasonal flooding. Due to this, swamp oak plays an important role in the ecosystems of lowland forests.
An adult tree can reach 25 meters in height. Its crown has a pyramidal shape: the lower branches are directed down, the central ones grow horizontally, and the upper ones rise up.
Of particular interest are the leaves of the plant. They have deep cutouts and pointed blades, because of what they look like maple blades. In autumn, the green foliage gradually turns into bronze, scarlet and scarlet tones.
Swamp oak is widely used in landscape design due to its decorativeness and ability to grow in urban environments. In the natural environment, its acorns also serve as food for wild animals.
In the Sochi National Park, it is recommended to plan a walk to the unusual tree in November, when its crown will become especially bright. You can find a swamp oak above the species glade of the Arboretum.
