In the Sochi arboretum, visitors were told about the medicinal magnolia (Magnolia officinalis), which was planted in the park in 2015. The plant has not yet bloomed, but attracts attention with large leaves and an unusual appearance.
According to the staff of the arboretum in the thematic channel, magnolia medicinal, also known as hopo, hails from China. In natural conditions, it is found in mountain forests and can reach 20 meters in height.
The tree has a thick brown bark, and young shoots are covered with silky puffing. The leaves can grow up to 45 centimeters in length.
The species is threatened due to the decline of natural populations, including due to harvesting of bark, and is included in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Specialists also pay attention to the differences between Magnolia officinalis and the close species Magnolia obovata. Among the characteristic features are the structure of the fruits and a darker bark.
Arboretum employees estimate that the tree, which they estimate to be about 15 years old, could bloom in the coming years.
Earlier it was reported that a particle of the relics of Matrona of Moscow was brought to Sochi.
