The animal was noticed by a local landowner, and employees of the state Department of Natural Resources confirmed information on photos from surveillance cameras and the results of the inspection of the territory.
The first report of the predator came in August. On August 25, experts examined the place of the alleged appearance of the animal, and a few days later it was again recorded by a camera - the puma moved north towards the city of Murphysboro.
This is the 12th confirmed case of a mountain lion in Illinois since 2002. According to local conservation services, the animals disappeared from the state before 1870 due to hunting and habitat loss. No permanent breeding population has been found here.
Previously confirmed cases have been attributed mainly to young males who may have come from western states, including Nebraska and South Dakota. When meeting with a puma, experts advise not to approach it, do not run away, slowly retreat and report the observation to environmental agencies.
