In the Tula region, as part of the Union State program to overcome the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, a research project will soon start. 14.2 million rubles will be allocated for these purposes.
As it became known “MK in Tula”, the study will last until the end of 2027. The customer is the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia.
The main goal of the study is to study the current state of soil and vegetation cover in the most polluted areas of the Tula region. Special attention will be paid to the valleys of the rivers Plava and Upa.
As part of the first stage, which will be held in 2026, scientists will conduct field surveys of soils and vegetation in the Plava River basin, analyze the content of cesium-137 in 200 soil samples and 30 vegetation samples, study the physical characteristics of soils.
The second stage in 2027 will cover the territory of the Upa River basin and will include the selection and analysis of 350 soil samples, the study of 30 vegetation samples, the creation of a detailed map of foci of radioactive contamination.
An important part of the study will be the development of new methods for monitoring the radiation situation and assessing the risks of radionuclides entering the food chain. Scientists will also identify accumulator plants and discriminators of radionuclide accumulation.
The results of the study will help to develop effective measures to protect the population and rational use of land in the affected areas. All work will be carried out in compliance with existing standards and standards.
As previously wrote “MK in Tula”, Tula forests decided to check for radiation 40 years after the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. More than 41 million rubles were allocated for these purposes.
