In Volgograd, the pedestals with the land of the hero cities will temporarily leave Mamaev Kurgan

The Committee for State Protection of Cultural Heritage Sites of the Volgograd Region informed about the start of restoration work on one of the key elements of the Mamaev Kurgan – pedestals with the land of hero cities and the Brest Fortress. The works are carried out at the ensemble of the square of the introductory composition of the memorial complex "Heroes of the Battle of Stalingrad", which has the status of an object of cultural heritage of federal significance; their conduct is agreed with the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.

The project provides for the replacement of the former reinforced concrete pedestals with stone cladding with solid granite blocks. Capsules with earth, collected from the hero cities and the Brest Fortress, will be safely stored in the funds of the Museum-Reserve "Battle of Stalingrad" for the duration of the work, after which they will again be placed in the updated pedestals. Restorers will pay special attention to the restoration of decorative elements – letters and medals "Golden Star".

These events complete the cycle of works on updating the ensemble of the introductory composition area, which began at the end of 2024. At the first stage, the specialists put in order the structural elements: repaired the base, shifted the steps, updated the granite coating of the tracks. At the same time, a new memorial zone was opened to the left of the central staircase – it perpetuates the feat of Stalingrad, Kalacha-on-Don (the city of military glory) and settlements awarded the title "Frontier of Stalingrad Valor". Its architectural solution is built on the principle of mirror reflection of the composition of the pedestals with the ground; the unity of style is achieved due to the same technical, decorative and color solutions.

This year, the zone was supplemented with pedestals in honor of the six "Frontiers of Stalingrad Valor" – Kamyshin, Surovikino, Ilovlya, Oktyabrsky, Svetly Yar and Chernyshkovsky. This section of the complex not only emphasizes the connection of times, but also becomes a semantic bridge to the museum being built nearby, dedicated to the modern defenders of the Fatherland.

In parallel, restoration work continues on other sections of the memorial (with the permission of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation). In particular, in the summer of 2026, sculptural compositions were updated in Heroes' Square. Earlier, in 2020, a large-scale restoration of the sculpture "Motherland Calls!", which became the main symbol of the complex, was completed.
