Nineteen years ago, by decree of the President of Russia, Yelna was awarded the honorary title of the Russian Federation “City of Military Glory”. It was a recognition of courage, perseverance and mass heroism of the defenders of the city, manifested in the struggle for freedom and independence of the Motherland.
In 1941, on the Smolensk land, the Red Army conducted one of the first successful offensive operations of the Great Patriotic War, eliminating the Yelny ledge. Here the Soviet Guard was born: four rifle divisions were the first to receive the title of guards for courage and high military skill.
In 1943, for the liberation of the city, the 144th Infantry Division was given the honorary name Yelninskaya. In 2018, by the decree of the President of Russia, it received its full name - the 144th Guards Motorized Rifle Yelny Red Banner Order of Suvorov II Division.
Today Yelnya continues to cherish the memory of his heroes. The feat of the defenders of the Fatherland resembles a stele of military glory. The city regularly hosts events aimed at strengthening the ties of generations and patriotic education of young people.
Vasily Anokhin noted that the memory of the heroes of Yelni today inspires the defenders of the country. Soldiers of the 144th Guards Motorized Rifle Division of Yelny from the first days of a special military operation perform military duty in the most important areas.
The head of the region congratulated Yelnytsev on a significant date and wished eternal glory to the heroes of Yelny and all the defenders of the Fatherland.
