Eight convicts of IK-2 restored 100 benches for streets and parks of Ulyanovsk
In Ulyanovsk, convicts of penal colony No. 2 were attracted to the improvement of public spaces

In Ulyanovsk, convicts of penal colony No. 2 were involved in the improvement of public spaces. A team of eight people has been busy restoring 100 street benches. Updated structures have already appeared on the central boulevards of the city, and next year this work is planned to continue.
Residents can see the renovated benches on Novy Venets, Goncharova and Plastov Boulevards. Before returning the street furniture to its original places, it was sent to the production workshops of penal colony No. 2.
There the structures have undergone a full restoration. Workers dismantled the benches, removed the old coating from the metal parts using sandblasting, and then applied a new powder paint. Weared wooden elements were replaced with new ones.
A total of 100 garden sofas have been restored this year. Finished products are transferred to the City Center for landscaping and landscaping in batches, after which they are installed in public spaces.
According to Oleg Ilyichev, deputy head of IK-2, the institution has been cooperating with the city administration for several years. Previously, the convicts made container platforms, sewed special clothes and were engaged in the production of metal structures.
In particular, employees of the colony participated in the improvement of the territory near the Ulyanovsk Drama Theater. To protect the trees, they made and painted special fences.
The production activities of the institution are not limited to city orders. The colony develops three main areas: woodworking, metalworking and garment production.
One of the major projects was the conversion of vehicles to transport convicts. In 2026, 20 such machines were manufactured in IK-2 under a state contract. On the new chassis are installed special cameras, heating, ventilation, alarm and other necessary equipment. There is also a manual ramp for people with disabilities. Ready-made transport is sent to various regions of Russia, including Moscow.
In addition, the colony fulfills orders of local enterprises. For example, produces overalls for a greenhouse complex in Barataevka.
According to Oleg Ilyichev, work in workshops allows convicts to master professions and gain practical experience. More trained employees train beginners, so that the production process continues even with a change in the composition of the brigades.
For completed orders, convicts receive wages that can be used for personal needs or sent to relatives. Conscientious attitude to work is also taken into account when considering issues of parole and transfer to a colony-settlement, although in itself does not guarantee a positive decision.
The cooperation of the correctional institution with the municipality is planned to be further developed. The head of Ulyanovsk Alexander Boldakin instructed to continue the restoration of urban street furniture next year.
