Sexually transmitted shigellosis incidence on the rise in the US

In the United States, there is an increase in the incidence of shigellosis, the causative agent of which acquires resistance to drugs. This was reported on October 8 by the New York Post.

The infection, characterized by diarrhea with blood or mucus, abdominal pain, fever and vomiting, is increasingly transmitted sexually. Shigella bacteria affect nearly half a million people every year.

According to the publication, the pathogen evolves, becoming almost incurable. Especially often the disease is detected in adult men.

Statistics show alarming dynamics of bacterial resistance. The proportion of strains resistant to five common antibiotics rose from zero in 2011 to 8.5% in 2023.

The situation is compounded by the speed at which such cases spread. If in 2022 in California recorded only one such episode in the whole year, now they are detected about once a month.
