Tomorrow, October 11, Kalmykia celebrates the memory of the Monk Chariton the Confessor, who lived in the III-IV centuries in Iconia (a city in Asia Minor).
During the persecution of Christians by Emperor Aurelian, he suffered for his faith. The pagans brutally beat the martyr and imprisoned him in prison, from where he came only during the reign of Emperor Tacitus.
Having received his freedom, Chariton went to the Holy Land, but not far from Jerusalem he was seized by robbers and led to his cave. From the death of the saint saved the snake, which poisoned the wine. The robbers drank it and died, and Chariton remained in the cave, where he built a church. Soon he had followers from whom the community formed. Christians formed the Pharana Lavra, the first monastic abode in the Judean desert.
