Orthodox Kalmykia tomorrow will honor the memory of the Monk Theophan the Merciful.
There is no detailed evidence of his life and deeds, we only know that he was a rich man and at the same time very kind. Theophanes lived in the Palestinian city of Gaza, constantly receiving strangers in his home, giving them shelter, food and care. It is not surprising that towards the end of his life the saint became impoverished, and to top it all off he suffered a serious illness. Theophanes endured suffering steadfastly and humbly.
Four days after his death, the saint appeared to a man and asked him to roll off the tombstone on his grave. When this was done, people felt a wonderful fragrance that came from the body of the pleaser. The relics of Theophanes, according to legend, exuded myrrh, which miraculously healed the sick.
