Residents of Olenino thanked the Governor of the Tver region Vitaly Korolev for supporting the initiative to award the district the title of “Land of Military Valor”.
According to local residents, the assignment of such a title to their small homeland was achieved for several years, but only with the arrival of Vitaly the Queen managed to resolve this issue. For all Olenians, receiving the title “Land of Military Valor” became a significant event in the history of their native land.
During the Great Patriotic War, Oleninsky district was under occupation for a long 17 months. Through this land passed the line of the Rzhevsk-Vyazemsk defensive line. Bloody battles with the enemy were fought in the villages of Kholmets and Young Tud, the villages of Dubrovka, Gusevo, Tarkhovo, Urdom.
Today, 30 military graves are reminiscent of those terrible events, in which 38 thousand soldiers found peace. According to the archive, only on Olenin land, defending the Motherland, 228 thousand soldiers died. Thousands of Olenians were awarded for courage and heroism, and 13 were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
