Residents of Izhevsk were told that in the Volga Delta and off the coast of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan, two new species of gobies were found - the Caspian button and the Scythian Zutsik bull. The discovery was made using genetic analysis: it showed that there are more species than previously thought.
The button was very rare - it was caught only twice. It has long been separated from its relatives. The Scythian Zutsik bull is associated with Black Sea species, which confirms the ancient connection of the Black and Caspian Seas about 2.1 million years ago.
Some gobies are dangerous invasive species that spread along the Volga. Therefore, it is important to study their range.
