Japan and the United States are discussing the possibility of building a semiconductor factory in the United States. This was reported by Nikkei, citing sources in government circles of both countries. According to them, the total cost of the project is estimated from 2 trillion to 3 trillion yen ($ 12.8-19.3 billion).

According to Nikkei sources, the plan to build the plant is part of Tokyo’s commitment to invest $550 billion in the United States in exchange for the abolition of duties previously imposed by US President Donald Trump. So far, Japan has invested mainly in energy projects in the United States under this program, with plans to invest $73 billion in this area announced in March.

According to Nikkei, the United States wants to expand the production of semiconductors in the country, so the American representatives turned to Japan with such an initiative. Now the parties are discussing a specific project of the plant. According to sources, it is assumed that the plant after construction will be managed by the American company GlobalFoundries.
