Time magazine has compiled a list of the 100 most influential people “determining the future of art” for the first time. Among them are painters, photographers, sculptors and other creators, as well as curators, lawyers, philanthropists and museum leaders.
On the cover of the issue, Time magazine placed American portrait artist Amy Sherald. She works in the style of simplistic realism and is known for portraits of African Americans in everyday settings. In particular, Ms. Sherald painted the official portraits of former US President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.
Among the artists in the list are also Italian Maurizio Cattelan, representative of the indigenous peoples of the United States Jeffrey Gibson, American Kerry James Marshall, German Gerhard Richter, French photographer and street artist JR.
The list includes 11 patrons, including investor Ken Griffin, entrepreneur Ronald Lauder and art collector Komal Shah. The top 100 also features Metropolitan Museum of Art director Max Hollein, Banksy, Harlem Museum-Studio head Thelma Golden and New York Guggenheim Museum chief curator Naomi Beckwith.
