An unnamed buyer bought the canvas at a property sale in Michigan for $30, unaware that it was the work of a famous surrealist. Noticing the barely distinguishable signature, he turned to experts who confirmed the identity of Gertrude Abercrombie's brush.
Elder Merriam's Shells, written in 1951, has not been exhibited in public for almost 75 years. The artist gave the painting to the doctor, after which it was inherited. Shells were one of her favorite motifs in her work.
In addition to painting, Abercrombie, who died in 1977, was known for her Chicago salons, where jazz stars such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Sarah Vaughan performed.
