On Thursday, September 24, a series of lectures “Military Archaeology: Weapons, Restoration, Fortification, People” will begin at the Scientific Center “Archaeology and Restoration”. The military history of the Tula Territory will be told by archaeologists and restorers of the Kulikovo Field Museum-Reserve.
The course is timed to the 35th anniversary of the Tula archaeological expedition, which was celebrated in 2026. Students will learn about the history of the region’s defensive structures, archaeological studies of battlefields and settlements of the service population, as well as the restoration of weapons found.
The first lecture “History of Fortification of the Oksko-Don Region: from the “burned ramparts” to the Tula Kremlin” will be held on September 24 at 17:00 on Metallistov Street, 1. It will be conducted by the head of the department of archaeological research of the Kulikovo Field Museum-Reserve Alexander Kolokolov.
He will tell how the fortifications in the Oksko-Don region changed from the early Iron Age to the Middle Ages. From simple earthen ramparts and wooden structures gradually moved to more complex fortifications, and the pinnacle of the fortification art of the region was the stone Tula Kremlin.
The next meeting will be held on October 15 at 17:00. Artem Krukhmal, a researcher at the museum, will give a lecture “Archaeology of the Battlefields”.
November 5 at 17:00 Cyril Fomin will talk about Epiphani XVI-XVII centuries and the settlements of the service population. The cycle will be completed on December 3 at 17:00 by the lecture of the highest category restorer Vitaly Shmelev “Restoration of archaeological weapons: from earth to laboratory”.
