Today, September 24, in the national calendar - Fedora Autumn (Fedorina evenings). In the south of Russia, including in Sochi, this day was perceived as a milestone: the warm season gradually gives way to autumn dampness, and the usual summer worries are replaced by preparation for the cold.
In ancient times, Fedora tried to complete field and gardening work: it was believed that "Fedora - to every cause of amen", that is, after this date to work on the land is no longer worth it. Special attention was paid to winter crops: men went out to inspect the crops, and if the greenery was thick and juicy, it was considered a good omen - then the future harvest will be generous.
One of the main traditions of the day was cabbage gatherings. Women gathered together to chop cabbage, harvest it for the winter and cook dishes from this vegetable. Such meetings turned into a kind of autumn evenings: at work they sang, shared news and handicrafted. Hence the second name of the date - Fedorina evenings.
Among the signs that drew attention to this day, especially highlighted the weather. Rain on Fedora promised a long and rainy autumn, and a clear, warm sun, on the contrary, promised that warm days will last for a long time. Birds were also observed: if cranes were already flying south, they were waiting for the early arrival of winter, and the abundance of mushrooms in the forests was considered a sign of snow and cold weather.
In the Sochi climate, where autumn comes milder and later than in the middle lane, the signs of Fedorin’s day acquired a local shade: instead of fields, gardens and vineyards were more often looked after, and cabbage billets were supplemented with blanks from late vegetables and fruits. Nevertheless, the general meaning of the date remained the same - it was a day of summing up the summer and leisurely preparation for the winter season.
