September 23 in the national calendar celebrates the day of Peter and Paul Ryabinnikov - a date that in Russia was associated with the collection of ash after the first autumn cold. It was believed that by this time the berries become less bitter and better suited for blanks.
In the old days, on this day, they collected ash, dried it, cooked compotes and kvass, prepared pies and home infusions. At the same time, some of the clusters were traditionally left on trees - for birds and forest animals.
Special importance was attributed to the ash as a symbol of home well-being. Its branches were hung at the entrance to the house and under the roof, believing that they serve as a talisman of the dwelling. Various folk customs were associated with this day, including fortune telling and future events.
There was also a belief about what to avoid on September 23. According to popular tradition, it was not advised to start important business, quarrel with loved ones, brag about success and completely tear the ash from the tree.
This day was considered a time of observing nature. If the ash was a lot of berries, expected rainy autumn and harsh winter, and warm clear weather, on the contrary, was perceived as a sign of late onset of cold weather. They also paid attention to the flight of birds and morning fog, linking them with the weather of the coming October.
In 2026, September 23 coincides with the autumn equinox, the moment when the length of day and night becomes almost the same, and in the Northern Hemisphere begins astronomical autumn.
