Tulaks will hear details of Leo Tolstoy’s travels to Belgium and Italy
Next Sunday, October 18, in Tula will tell about the European trips of Leo Tolstoy

Next Sunday, October 18, in Tula will tell about the European trips of Leo Tolstoy. The lecture “European Travels of L. N. Tolstoy: Belgium, Italy, Switzerland” will be held in the cultural and exhibition complex “L. N. T.” on Metallistov Street, 25. Start at 14:00, told “MK in Tula” organizers.
About the routes of the writer will tell senior researcher of the museum-estate "Yasnaya Polyana", Professor Galina Ovchinnikova. Listeners will learn which cities Tolstoy visited, with whom he met and how he studied European schools, courts and other public institutions, recording observations in his diary.
A separate part of the lecture will be devoted to the Swiss Lucerne and the story of Tolstoy “Lucerne”, written in 1857. The work was based on the case of a street musician who performed in front of hotel guests, but did not receive money from them. This episode prompted the writer to reflect on indifference and social injustice.
We will also talk about the influence of Jean-Jacques Rousseau on the worldview of Tolstoy. In his youth, the writer was fond of the works of the French philosopher, and his ideas about moral perfection, equality and natural life influenced his own views.
In Belgium, Tolstoy met the philosopher Pierre-Joseph Proudhon. During the conversation, he read to the Russian writer his manuscript "La Guerre et la Paix" - "War and Peace".
Tolstoy called his second trip abroad a trip to European schools. Having already opened a school for peasant children in Yasnaya Polyana, he wanted to study foreign educational experience. However, the trip was overshadowed by the illness and death of his older brother Nicholas in Yer.
As Galina Ovchinnikova notes, a careful study of European life helped Tolstoy comprehend what he saw and understand what caused him admiration and what - disappointment.
The lecture will begin at 14:00 and will last about an hour.
Age restriction - 12 +
We will remind, earlier “MK in Tula” told that the Tolstoy Museum will transport 45 thousand exhibits from Moscow to Yasnaya Polyana for 20 million.
