The holiday was established in 1978 at the Xth session of the Assembly of the Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization. It is traditionally celebrated on one of the days of the last week of September. In 2026, by decision of the International Maritime Organization, the date of celebration falls on September 24.

The main goal of the event is to draw public attention to the environmental safety of shipping, the protection of the marine environment from oil and plastic pollution, as well as to the problems of poaching and the conservation of marine biological resources.
