The banner of the Penza militia of 1812-1814 was first sent for restoration. The historical relic is kept in the Penza State Museum of Local Lore since 1952, but until now restoration work has not been carried out with it.
The banner entered the museum collection together with two standards of the horse regiment. It was the only one of the three items that had not been restored before.
As noted in the press service of the Ministry of Culture of the Penza region, the work will be carried out by specialists of the All-Russian Art Scientific and Restoration Center named after academician I. E. Grabar. The restoration of the relic will be carried out by the artist-restorer of the leather and textile workshop Anna Lifanova under the guidance of a specialist of the highest category Natalia Sinitsyna, who has 50 years of experience. Natalia Sinitsyna participated in the restoration and conservation of historical and cultural monuments not only in Russia and CIS countries, but also in Egypt, Qatar, Mongolia, Oman and the United States.
We are talking about the banner of the 3rd battalion of the 2nd infantry regiment of the Penza militia. It is a square cloth measuring 56 by 56 centimeters, made of green silk and decorated with embroidery.
In the center of the banner is the monogram of Emperor Alexander I, surrounded by laurel branches. Above it there is a Russian crown and a cross, and the letters “P” and “O” are placed on the sides, denoting the Penza militia. On the lower edge of the canvas, the inscription “2nd regiment of the 3rd baht [alion]” was preserved.
The restoration was made possible with the participation of the Governor of the Penza region, Chairman of the regional branch of the Russian Military Historical Society Oleg Melnichenko.
After the completion of the work, the banner will take place in the museum exhibition for the first time. It is expected that visitors will be able to see the restored relic already in 2027, when it will be 215 years since the start of the Patriotic War of 1812.
