The rise in diesel prices is costing European drivers €203 million a day, the FT said. An analysis of European Commission data by the European non-governmental organisation Transport & Environment found drivers were paying 40% more than at the start of the year. That's about €30 for a 50-litre tank at each refueling. Gasoline prices have risen 28% this year.
The main reasons for the growth were interruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions in supplies from Russian refineries. Europe is more dependent on diesel than other regions, accounting for more than 40% of its consumption of petroleum products, which is twice as much as in the United States.
France, where diesel prices have soared, is proposing that the EU temporarily ease fuel quality and biodiesel requirements to lower prices. At the same time, experts call for accelerating the electrification of transport.
