Japan, which buys about 10% of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia, is unlikely to be subject to US tariffs on Russian energy. This conclusion is given by the agency Kyodo.
This follows from the law on toughening sanctions against Russia, which was signed by President Donald Trump. The document makes exceptions for countries that reduce imports and receive less than 15% of gas from Russia. Japan is not expected to fall under these measures, the agency reports.
Earlier, Trump signed a bill approved by the US Congress to tighten sanctions against Russia. Washington may impose 100 percent duties on countries that are key buyers of Russian oil and gas.
Japan is one of the world’s largest LNG importers. From Russia, it receives about 9-10% of this fuel. Supplies from the Sakhalin-2 project provide about 3% of all electricity generation in the country. Some Japanese regions, such as Hiroshima, cover almost half of their needs with Russian gas.
