A hip fracture is one of the most severe injuries of the musculoskeletal system, which is associated with advanced age. About what factors provoke bone damage in the elderly and in what cases with a similar injury faced by young people, said the Russian trauma doctor-orthopedist Sergei Smetanin, writes sb.by.

According to the doctor, most cases occur in elderly patients. This is facilitated by a complex of physiological causes:
Age-related osteoporosis and hormonal background. Women are particularly at risk. With the onset of menopause, the level of female sex hormones (estrogens) drops sharply, because of which bone tissue begins to gradually lose density and thin. Within 20-30 years after menopause, the likelihood of a fracture increases significantly.
Impaired coordination. Older people often suffer from a decrease in muscle strength and reactions, because of which they do not have time to group together in case of an accidental fall.
The effect of drugs. The wrong dosage or a sharp drop in pressure cause dizziness and weakness, leading to falls literally out of the blue.
At the same time, the traumatologist stressed that such a fracture is diagnosed not only in old age. Young, able-bodied and physically active people can be affected. However, their fracture occurs as a result of so-called high-energy injury - for example, in serious road accidents or falling from a great height.
The urologist explained when frequent urination is the norm and in which cases it is necessary to consult a doctor
