About whether depression really increases the risk of stroke and what usual medicines from the home first aid kit can pose a real threat to blood vessels, told Russian neurologist Tatiana Vinogradova, writes sb.by.

The specialist confirmed that depressive disorders increase the risk of stroke, but prescribed by doctors antidepressants (selective type) are not as dangerous as commonly believed. According to the neurologist, any medications — even banal anti-inflammatory drugs that many people buy at a pharmacy without a prescription — are far from harmless.
“Excessive use of simple painkillers increases stroke risk significantly more than antidepressants.” Drugs of the NSAID group (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). — Approx. ed.) interfere in the processes of thrombosis, platelet adhesion, — explained the doctor.
As for antidepressants, they can actually increase the risk of bleeding minimally (by about 15%). However, the doctor always evaluates the individual characteristics of the patient: whether his body is prone to thrombosis or, conversely, to bleeding.
“If the patient is prone to the formation of blood clots, and the antidepressant slightly thins the blood, the drug works for double prevention – protects against depression and reduces the risk of vascular catastrophe,” said Tatiana Vinogradova. If a person is already taking blood thinners, the doctor must carefully adjust the dosages.
That is why any medication can not be taken thoughtlessly, the expert stressed. Their appointment always requires strict medical supervision and a personalized approach.
