Scammers in Russia have moved to new multi-stage schemes of deception, which use several characters and communication channels. This was reported in the press center of the MIA of the Russian Federation.
If earlier, fraud began with a simple call about an allegedly blocked bank card, today criminals conduct multi-pass operations. In them, the victim may first receive a message with a phishing link, then a call allegedly from the security service of the bank or the police demanding to transfer money to a “safe account”. The scheme ends with the arrival of a courier who takes cash or helps to arrange financial transactions.
The Interior Ministry notes that fraudsters have significantly improved the quality of personalization of attacks. They study the information in social networks – profession, interests, marital status, digital habits of a potential victim to create a believable legend that is directly related to a person’s life.
This approach makes it difficult to recognize deception and increases the effectiveness of fraudulent schemes. Criminals may pose as bank or law enforcement officers and threaten criminal prosecution, account locking or travel restrictions.
