In St. Petersburg, unknown persons set up an organized group to systematically deceive people across Russia and steal their money. To do this, they used mobile communication and Internet technologies.
Fraudsters used special equipment – the so-called GSM gateways. These are devices that insert SIM cards: through them you can massively send messages, call and distribute the Internet. Simply put, this is a technique that allows you to change numbers and conduct mass calls.
The arrested member of the group, according to the investigation, placed this equipment together with a laptop and a Wi-Fi router in different places of St. Petersburg, including in a residential apartment. So he created an illegal communication node through which his accomplices could repeatedly call potential victims and deceive them to collect money.
Krasnogvardeysky district court of St. Petersburg sent the accused into custody. He is suspected of a crime under part 3 of article 274.3 of the criminal code. The charges have not yet been filed, the defendant himself did not object to the arrest. He will remain in custody until early January.
