ABC reports that a Wisconsin law enforcement officer has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on charges of staying in the United States illegally.
According to the lawyer of the detainee, 21-year-old Aaron van der Merwe is facing deportation to South Africa. The young man was detained at the airport while he was waiting to board a domestic flight. The defense insists that he came to the United States as a child and waited seven years for an interview on a request for refugee status, and his work permit is allegedly valid until 2030.
Immigration authorities, in turn, claim that Merwe arrived in the country in 2019 and in a few months should have left it. The TV channel calls him a patrol officer, but does not provide details about his law enforcement activities.
Earlier it was reported that a helicopter with a pilot and two passengers fell into Biscayne Bay near Miami.
