Rosreestr published the longest and shortest names of settlements in our country. In the list there was a place and cities from the Chelyabinsk region.
The shortest names of Russian cities, according to the Ministry, consist of three letters. There are 16 of them across the country, and two of them are in the Chelyabinsk region. Both of them are located in the mining zone - this is the city of Asha and the city of Sim.
The city of Asha stands on the bank of the Sim River at the foot of the Karatau ridge. The settlement was founded in 1898, and it received the status of a city in 1933. Experts believe that the name of the city comes from the Turkic “ash”, which means to cross. The explanation in general is logical, because not far from Asha travelers have to pass through the Ural mountains. However, there is a version that the name of the settlement could come from the name of one of the Bashkir families - "assa" or "asha". A little over 26,000 people currently live in Asha.
The city of Sim is located in the Ashin district of the Chelyabinsk region about 27 kilometers from Asha. It was founded in 1759, and the city began to be called since 1942. In the history books of this Sim got, among other things, due to the fact that in 1774 the detachment of Salavat Yulaev during the uprising burned the Sim factory. Then about sixty people died. The origins of the names of the city and the river of the same name are several. One says that the word "Sim" comes from the Bashkir "sum" - the so-called pool, deep place. Another nods to the word “esem”, which means a drink, the third points to the Tatar word “usem”, which can be translated into Russian as “algae”. Currently, the number of residents of Sim is more than 12 thousand people.
Note that the longest name among Russian cities has Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinsky, located in the Sakhalin region.
Ashu and Chelyabinsk will be connected by new railway routes.
