October 28, 2026: Do not destroy the peace between loved ones and do not anger the house

The Church on October 28, 2026 remembers St. Euthymius of the New Solunsky. This monk and wonderworker lived in the ninth century and founded several monasteries near the Greek city of Soluni. In the national calendar, the date was called Ethymius Autumn. In 2026, it falls on Wednesday. According to popular ideas, the saint closes the autumn season and brings the first strong cold.

October 28, 2026: Do not destroy the peace between loved ones and do not anger the house

The future monk was born in 824 in a wealthy Christian family. Her parents Epiphanius and Anna helped the poor and raised children in the faith. At baptism, the boy was given the name Nikita. When he was seven years old, his father died. The mother was left alone with her son and two daughters. Nikita from an early age helped in the household, and when he grew up, went to military service.

The mother wanted to marry her son so that the daughter-in-law would take over some of the household chores. The choice fell on a girl named Euphrosyne. Soon the couple had a daughter Anastasia. But the young man was drawn to the monastic life. Once he told his family that he was going to visit the horse in the pasture, and he went to look for the monastery. So he reached Mount Olympus in Bithynia, where the famous Elder John the Great asceticized.

He decided to test the humility of the beginner. He accused Nikita of murder and ordered the monks to tie him up. The young man did not argue, admitted guilt and prepared for punishment. Then the elder stopped the monks and explained that the accusation was fiction.

On Olympus Euthymius lived about fifteen years, and then decided to go to Athos for the sake of solitude. Before the road he was cut in a great schema. When he learned that his mother, wife, and relatives were alive, he sent them a cross and a message of monasticism.

Later Euthymius returned to Olympus, and then moved to Solun. There he chose a special path: he prayed all day on an elevated platform and instructed those who came. They came to him for advice, he treated the sick and reconciled those who were hostile. In 863 in a dream Euthymius was instructed to find an abandoned temple of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called. Together with two monks, he found a dilapidated church, which the locals used as a cattle pen. In two years, the temple was restored, and a monastery grew around it. The monk led the monastery for about fourteen years. Later, he founded a convent where his mother, wife and sisters were tonsured. The last years Euthymius spent on Athos, away from visitors. He died in 898, and later his relics were transferred to Solun.

By the end of October, the peasants usually finished the work in the fields, harvested the crops and made the main supplies. The daylight was shortened, in the morning it caught a frost. Economic care moved under the roof: housing was insulated, winter clothes were repaired, raw materials were prepared for spinning and weaving.

The men inspected the roofs, strengthened the doors, closed the cracks in the walls, put in order the inventory and prepared the sled. In some places, they began to roll the boots. Women took up flax. The stems were pulverized with wooden devices to crush the hard core, then trembled with boards, removing the rough remnants. The fiber was sorted and prepared for scratching and spinning. The strength of future threads depended on how well they worked, so they did not try to hurry. In a number of regions, women came together, shared news, sang and gave each other advice.

There is also a well-known belief associated with spinning. Peasants believed that with the cold in the house begins to host the Kikimore. She was credited with the ability to confuse threads, tear the canvas, carry small things and beat dishes. Especially feared her near the spinning wheel or weaving camp. To protect the work, the women baptized the camp and addressed with prayer to the Monk Euthymius. Another superstition concerned the filament that was spun on October 28. It was removed in a secluded place, and if someone fell ill, it was tied to the wrist of the patient until recovery.

Everything was done before sunset. With the onset of darkness, the impure force, according to legend, became bolder: it could sprinkle supplies, confuse threads or spoil the finished fabric. Therefore, in the evening the tools were removed, the yarn was hidden, and the housing was put in order.

The day was suitable for home care and preparation for winter:

There are many bans associated with the day. Violation of any of them, according to legend, could turn into trouble:

The weather and the behavior of nature on this day judged what the winter and the next harvest will be:

Dreams on the night of October 28 are considered prophetic and come true within a few days. They help to look into the near future and solve current problems. To get an answer to a specific question, it is recommended to write it down on paper before going to bed and put it under the pillow: a dream will suggest the right solution in real life.
