Deputies of Kalmykia discussed the problem of solid municipal waste management

In the People’s Khural (Parliament) of the Republic of Kalmykia, an expanded meeting of the Committee on Industry, Construction, Housing and Communal Services, Energy, Transport and Communications was held.

Topical issues in the field of solid municipal waste management: existing problems and ways to solve them. The reason was the numerous appeals of citizens and requests received to deputies: parliamentarians stated that the situation with garbage removal has worsened and requires a substantive analysis.

At the meeting, key points were outlined in the organization of the solid municipal waste management system in the republic. The fleet of special equipment of the regional operator has been significantly updated. In parallel, local governments are expanding the network of container sites. As a result, the infrastructure for collecting MSW in the republic has significantly increased.

The key problem is the state of the only waste disposal facility in the republic, the landfill in Elista. According to Rosprirodnadzor, the residual capacity of the facility has been exhausted, while waste outputs beyond the boundaries of the allocated site are recorded. The agency is already working to eliminate the consequences of pollution of adjacent territories.
