The baby of an unusual tropical monkey - squirrel saimiri - was born in the Moscow zoo. He spends most of his time on Gerda's mother's back.
The sex of the baby is still unknown. He feeds on his mother's milk, but will soon begin to taste adult food, which will be taken from his mother's mouth. These are pieces of fruit, vegetables, insects, mixed feed, eggs, shrimp and chicken. The most delicious treat for these monkeys is a flourworm. It is used by kippers during veterinary training.
The rest of the family is interested in the newborn. He is approached by his two-year-old brother Samuel and six-year-old sister Tutsi. Also in the group of squirrel saimiri live the father of the baby – male Kai, and sister Gerda Tefi.
Squirrel saimiri is a small and very mobile monkey from the family of tenacious tails. It lives in the tropical forests of South America: Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Suriname and Venezuela. He leads a day-to-day lifestyle.
Among primates, the Saimiri have the largest brain in terms of body weight. He's 1 in 17. In comparison, the ratio of brain to body weight is 1 in 35.
