November 8, 2026 Orthodox believers celebrate Dmitriev Day

On November 8, 2026, Orthodox believers celebrate Dmitriev Day. The Church remembers the holy Great Martyr Demetrius of Thessaloniki, whom the people called Mirotochets.
Who is Dimitri Solunsky?
The saint lived in the Greek Thessalonica during the time of persecution against Christians under the emperors Diocletian and Galerius. After his father’s death, he held high office, and was not afraid to openly preach his faith. According to legend, he was executed for blessing a Christian to win a gladiatorial battle. And the nickname "Myrotochets" he received because of the fragrant world exuded by his relics. Since then, Dimitry of Thessaloniki is considered the heavenly patron of warriors.
"Big autumns" and the meeting of winter
In Russia, this day was of great practical importance. By November 8, all the main autumn fieldwork was completed, and the peasants could finally breathe out and rest. In the people, the holiday was called the “Big Osenins” or the meeting of Mother Winter.
Main Tradition: Parent Day
Dmitriev’s day is closely associated with the commemoration of the dead. People called it “Dad’s Week”. It was considered mandatory to visit the cemetery, put in order the graves of loved ones before winter and arrange a memorial meal at home.
