As part of the World Alzheimer’s Day, volunteers of the LizaAlert search and rescue team in Karelia recalled the importance of attention to the elderly. It is not uncommon for a person suffering from dementia or memory loss to be lost just a few steps from home or in a familiar supermarket. In the Karelian climate, with its harsh forests and reservoirs, delay can cost lives.
What to pay attention to:
The person looks disoriented in a familiar setting.
The clothes are out of season.
Difficulty formulating thoughts, repeating the same questions.
Lack of personal belongings (keys, phone).
If you notice such behavior, do not pass by – just ask if the person does not need help. In case of confirmation of fears, immediately call 112 or the round-the-clock hotline of the squad: 8-800-700-54-52. If possible, take the person to the "Safety Island" (for example, to the nearest store).
Experts also advise to take care of the safety of loved ones in advance: put in the pocket of their clothes a note with the name and contact details of relatives. Remember: when a person disappears, you can not waste time on independent searches - immediately contact professionals.
