On the Sun marked a rapid increase in flare activity

Space tracking devices record a rapid increase in flare activity on the Sun. Over the past day alone, 18 events of class C and above were recorded, and during the first 12 hours of the current day, 17 more outbreaks were added to them. So in less than two days, the total number of events reached 35, and, according to experts, by the end of the day, the figure may well rise to 40 or even 50.

The beginning of a moderate increase in activity occurred in the middle of the week: on Monday and Tuesday, there were no outbreaks at all, on Wednesday and Thursday 3 events were recorded, among which was a large flare level M3.6 - the most powerful since the beginning of October, the press service of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory IKI RAS.

It was expected that the trend will continue, but on Friday there was a jump to 18 outbreaks per day, and on Saturday this figure is likely to be exceeded. The main source of activity is a large group of sunspots, located almost in the center of the visible disk: in this zone, energy from the interior of the Sun burns up in continuous explosions of medium strength.

The increase in activity occurs against the background of the outraged magnetosphere of the Earth, which last night entered the zone of action of a large coronal hole. Magnetic storms have not yet started, but the magnetosphere is in an unstable state. If shocks from powerful flares are added to this, the reaction of the magnetic field can be especially violent, up to the highest level of storms.

Experts emphasize that the historical maximum number of outbreaks per day is 25-30 events. The record for the current solar cycle – 29 flares – was recorded on December 10, 2024, and in a closer period, the last time more events, namely 19, were observed on August 19, 2026, almost three months ago.
