Onishchenko: 95% of the world’s population is not immune to monkeypox

95% of the world’s population is not immune to the monkeypox virus. This was stated by academician Gennady Onishchenko in an interview with NEWS.ru. According to him, earlier this disease was considered the most dangerous, as it was severe and accompanied by high mortality.

In evolutionary terms, the elimination of smallpox is called the first victory of man over the disease. But now the situation has changed.

“When we vaccinated children, they developed immunity to orthopoxviruses, which provide cross-protection. Now there is a population on the planet – it may already be 95% of the population, Onishchenko said.

He stressed that the transmission mechanism involved close contact. The disease develops in two stages: first malaise and fever, then a rash. At the same time, the academician added that now there is no reason to talk about the risks of widespread spread of the virus.
