Heating appliances, open to ventilate the window, moth remedies and poisonous baits for rodents can pose a serious threat to the health of domestic cats in the cold season. About how to protect pets during this period, told on ivbg.ru.
According to the veterinarian Tikhonenkov, in search of heat, animals often lie down next to batteries and heaters, which can lead to burns. Hairless cats are particularly vulnerable. In addition, the pet can overturn the portable heater or chew its wire. The doctor advised not to leave the devices on unattended, and to equip the cat bed away from sources of strong heat.
A separate threat is represented by windows open in vertical ventilation mode: a cat can get stuck in a narrow slit. According to the specialist, this threatens to compress internal organs, circulatory disorders and suffocation. If the pet was trapped in a window opening, after release it must be shown to the veterinarian, even if there are no visible injuries. For safety, the specialist recommends the use of protective grates, since conventional mosquito nets are not designed for the weight of the animal.
Also, the veterinarian drew attention to the toxicity of moths based on naphthalene and paradichlorobenzene, which owners get together with winter things. According to him, the entry of such drugs into the body can cause vomiting, weakness, damage to the nervous system and damage to blood cells. They should be stored in places inaccessible to animals. If the pet swallowed the remedy, it must be urgently taken to a veterinary clinic, taking a package of the drug with him.
In addition, according to the specialist, with a cold snap in residential houses and basements, rodents often penetrate, against which poisoned baits are laid. The veterinarian stressed that these poisons can be deadly for cats, so if an animal is suspected of contact with poison, you should immediately seek veterinary help.
