Friday gate of the Kolomna Kremlin closed for restoration: the tower hid a secret

The main entrance to the ancient citadel of Kolomna - the Pyatnitsky Tower - temporarily changed its status from the front to the regime. The legendary gate, which has welcomed guests of the city for centuries, closed for major restoration. A metal perimeter has already grown around the site: the safety of citizens and tourists is given priority, because the cultural heritage site requires delicate but decisive intervention.
Unlike the usual “cosmetic” repair, specialists will literally get to the bottom of it. The main intrigue of the project is the hidden life of the tower, which few people knew about.
First of all, the builders will take on the “foundation of health” of the structure: strengthen the soil and return the tower to its former monolithicity – a task not for faint-hearted engineers. The most intriguing part of the project is the preservation and study of the cache. Under the Friday Gate there is an underground corridor leading to the river. This is not just a legend, but a real artifact of the XVII century, which now awaits careful treatment. Inside the tower, the collapsed brick vaults will be restored: a unique inner passage, where one structure hides another, will regain integrity. Old wooden elements, decades held the defense from time to time, will be completely replaced, brickwork will be strengthened, and from the south side a section of the fortress wall will return to the historical site, recreating the appearance of the ancient fortress.
The restorers promise: despite the scale of the work, the city will not be left without a main gift. All key stages are planned to be completed by a significant date - the 850th anniversary of Kolomna. Friday's gates will open again, but now - with an updated history and a fortified rear.
