Dog boots and protective wax will help protect the paws from reagents in St. Petersburg

With the approach of winter, dog owners should reconsider the usual mode of walking. Cold, dampness, wind and deicing reagents can harm pets. And at risk are not only small shorthaired dogs, but also large animals with thick hair.
“MK in St. Petersburg” talked with the head of “KoshkodavkamNet” of the Fund “Law and Health” Grigory Balagurov, who told how to protect four-legged friends from hypothermia and road chemistry.
According to the expert, Chihuahuas, toy terriers, Yorkies and short-haired greyhounds are especially sensitive to cold. Dachshunds and bassets require special attention: because of their short legs, their stomach and chest often come into contact with snow and reagents.
Puppies, older dogs and animals with underweight or joint diseases also freeze faster. If the pet trembles, squeezes its legs or pulls the owner home, it is better to complete the walk.
For small and short-haired breeds, the specialist recommends insulated overalls with a water-repellent coating. Clothing should cover the chest and stomach, but not constrain movement. It is better to refuse hoods and bulky jewelry: snow accumulates in them, which then melts and moisturizes the wool.
Road reagents are particularly dangerous in winter. They can cause dry skin, cracks and burns of the legs. When licking, chemicals can get into the animal’s stomach and provoke digestive disorder or intoxication.
For protection, the expert advises to bypass chemically treated tracks and use special shoes. An alternative would be protective waxes or creams that are applied to clean, dry paws before walking.
After returning home, the paws should be washed with room temperature water, paying attention to the space between the fingers, and thoroughly dry. Long-haired dogs should also clean their stomach and chest. Redness, swelling and constant licking of the paws can be a reason to contact a veterinarian.
Balagurov recommends making winter walks active, and in severe cold reduce their duration. In addition, pets should not be allowed to eat snow, under which dirt and reagents may hide.
The main thing is to monitor the well-being of the dog. If the animal is cold, it is better to return home immediately.
